Ascan Lutteroth

Ascan Lutteroth (1825 - 1923) was one of the most important landscape painters of the late 19th century with his wide, bright views of Italy. The studies and sketches offered in the auction come directly from his estate.

He was born in Hamburg in 1842. He completed his first studies in landscape painting under Alexandre Calame in Geneva. In 1865/66 he transferred to the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, where he attended Carl Müller's geometric drawing class and Oswald Achenbach's landscape class from 1865-68.

Lutteroth undertook his first trip to Italy in 1868-1869 on the advice of Oswald Achenbach. He travelled to Rome and Naples and produced landscapes and coastal pieces that clearly show Achenbach's influence in their intense moods of light.

A year later, Lutteroth moved to Berlin, where he met Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. He travelled with him to Italy, Switzerland and Tyrol. The Tyrolean landscape inspired him to create impressive nature studies.

He returned to Hamburg in 1876, where he specialised in North German landscapes and coastal depictions. In addition to his paintings, his watercolours also met with a positive response. He received an honourary diploma for them in Dresden in 1887.
